Kurigram, Dec 21, (V7N) - A buffalo trader in Kurigram’s Ulipur Upazila has reported the theft of seven buffaloes. The incident took place in the Suridara area of Dhamsrani Union on Thursday night, December 19, 2024.
According to the case, the buffalo trader, Rubel Islam, a 30-year-old buffalo merchant from Rasulpur, Kaharol, Dinajpur, has been buying buffaloes from Roumari in Kurigram and selling them in Dinajpur for a long time. On Thursday, he purchased seven buffaloes and transported them by boat from Roumari to Fakirerhat Boat Ghat in the Raniganj Union of Chilmari Upazila. Later that night, he began his journey towards Dinajpur in a pickup truck (Dhaka Metro-KO-23-2816). However, in the Suridara area of Dhamsrani Union, the pickup was stopped by a group led by Arif Mia (30), the son of Lutfor Rahman from the same locality.
The group, including Arif, demanded to see the buffalo transaction papers. After the trader showed them the documents, they forcibly took the papers and the buffaloes, fleeing the scene. Later, when the pickup reached the Suridara area of Dhamsrani Union, Arif and his associates stopped the vehicle again, assaulted the trader and others, and seized the seven buffaloes. Shortly afterward, one of the robbers, Arif’s accomplice, took the pickup truck and the driver towards Ulipur Bazar.
Following this, Rubel Islam informed the Ulipur Police, who immediately launched an operation. They managed to recover the empty pickup truck in front of Ulipur Stadium. Rubel Islam then filed a complaint on the night of December 20, naming Arif Mia and three unknown individuals in the case.
The police conducted further raids and, with the help of intelligence, located the seven stolen buffaloes in an abandoned condition in the Nayabos Char area near the Fakirerhat Ghat in Raniganj Union, Chilmari.
Ulipur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zillur Rahman confirmed that a case has been filed for buffalo theft. The recovered buffaloes have been kept in police custody, and further legal actions will be taken as per the court's orders. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the thieves involved in this robbery.
