Noakhali, Dec 23 (V7N) — For years, the phrase "Noakhali wants division" has circulated on social media as a humorous remark, but the sentiment has now turned serious. Citizens of Noakhali are protesting rumours of Comilla being declared a division, demanding that their district instead be made an administrative division. Rejecting a merger with Comilla, they assert a preference for remaining part of Chittagong if their demand for a separate division is not met.

A procession and human chain were organised in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Noakhali town on Sunday morning. The event saw participation from political parties, student organizations, social groups, and educational institutions, including Noakhali Government College, Chaumuhani Government Saleh Ahmed College, and Women's College. Protesters called for the intervention of Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus to implement their demand for a Noakhali Division.

Leaders of the Noakhali Division Implementation Council emphasised the district's rich history, economic contributions, and strategic importance. They stated:

"Noakhali is a 200-year-old district with a significant role in the national economy, controlling 35% of it. Additionally, remittances from over seven lakh expatriates of this district fuel the country's economic growth."

They also highlighted Noakhali's association with national heroes like Bir Shrestha Ruhul Amin and argued that the district deserves recognition as the ninth administrative division.

Protesters voiced strong opposition to being merged into a division with Comilla, which is closer to Dhaka. They warned that any attempt to declare a division without public consultation would lead to mass dissent and even legal action.

"We demand a self-contained division for Noakhali. If a division is declared merging Noakhali with Comilla, the people of Noakhali will not accept it. We will fight this injustice in court if necessary," said one protest leader.

The protesters urged the government to recognise Noakhali’s autonomy, history, and contributions to the nation. They demanded a formal declaration of Noakhali as a division and pledged to continue their movement until their demands are met.

The event concluded peacefully but with a firm commitment from the residents and leaders of Noakhali to escalate their protests if their voices remain unheard.
