Rajshahi, Dec 23 (V7N)- The sudden firing by the Border Security Force (BSF) near the Yusufpur border in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi has left villagers in panic. In the early hours of Saturday night, locals were startled awake by the sound of 20 to 25 rounds of gunfire, causing widespread fear in the area.

Details of the Incident

The gunfire occurred near Karanash Char and Batan Char, close to border pillar 72/2 near the Yusufpur Border Outpost (BOP). According to sources, the BSF fired 12-14 rounds at 2:38 am, followed by 6-8 rounds at 2:45 am, and another 3-4 rounds at 2:50 am. The reason for the firing remains unclear, and no casualties have been reported.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducted a joint patrol with the BSF on Sunday morning and inquired about the firing. However, the BSF denied any involvement in the incident.

Impact on Villagers and Farmers

The firing has heightened fears among local farmers, who cultivate crops such as wheat, lentils, and mustard in the char areas along the Padma River. Shariful Islam, a local Union Parishad member, noted that the BSF has recently moved their camp closer to the zero line of the border, creating additional challenges for farmers.

"Many farmers are now afraid to visit the char due to the proximity of the BSF camp," Islam said. He also pointed out a prior incident on October 2, when the BSF detained two Bangladeshi fishermen, further escalating tensions in the area.

Precautionary Measures

Islam mentioned that villagers are being warned to avoid approaching the border. The BGB is expected to maintain heightened vigilance and continue dialogue with the BSF to ensure the safety and security of the residents.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by border communities, where frequent tensions disrupt daily life and livelihoods.
