Rangamati, Jan 17, (V7N) – The Rangamati district BNP has expelled 10 party members, including the President of the Baghaihat Upazila BNP, Omar Ali, and leaders from its affiliated organizations such as the Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal, following a series of allegations involving extortion, illegal activities, and other serious misconduct.
The expulsion, announced on January 15, was based on allegations involving illegal cigarette trade, market fund extortion, municipal tolls, sand mine occupation, collecting bribes through contractor work stoppages, and cutting down trees in gardens under the cover of night. These allegations were related to activities that were deemed to have tarnished the image of the party and caused internal discord.
The expelled members include:
Omar Ali – President of Baghaihat Upazila BNP, Nur Uddin – Convenor of Baghaihat Swechchhasebak Dal, Nur Kabir – Member of the Municipal Jubo Dal
Nurul Islam Zinnat – Secretary of Baghaihat Upazila Chhatra Dal, Imran Hossain Jumma – Convenor of Municipal Swechchhasebak Dal, Sarwar Gazi – Secretary of Kachalong, College Chhatra Dal, Shahadat Mollah – Joint Convenor of Municipal Chhatra Dal
Abdur Rahman – Joint Convenor of Municipal Swechchhasebak Dal, Amir Hossain – Joint Convenor of Baghaihat Upazila Chhatra Dal.
The district BNP’s decision to expel them was based on multiple media reports, including an article published on January 13 and 14 in a daily newspaper from Chittagong, and formal complaints lodged by local BNP leaders from Baghaihat Upazila and municipal areas. The party had previously issued multiple instructions to its members to refrain from engaging in such activities, but the expelled members failed to comply.
According to the expulsion letters, the expelled individuals had engaged in actions that violated the party’s principles, leading to significant damage to the party’s reputation. As a result, the district BNP has suspended their party positions until further notice, under the party’s organizational rules.
The letters also confirmed that a fact-finding committee, led by Senior Vice President Mohammad Abu Nasir of the district BNP, has been formed to investigate the allegations. The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report by January 30, 2025.
The expelled members are accused of leading and supporting activities such as illegal cigarette trading, market extortion, taking over sand mines, coercing people for money, disrupting contractor work, and cutting down trees. These actions were widely reported in the media and raised concerns about the integrity of the party’s operations in the region.
The investigation committee, consisting of several senior members of the district BNP, will assess the situation and report the findings. Based on the findings, further actions may be taken to maintain the discipline and reputation of the party.
The expulsion reflects the party’s commitment to maintaining integrity and discipline within its ranks and ensuring that such activities do not tarnish the party’s image.
