Savar, Jan 17 (V7N) - Indigenous communities residing in the industrial area of Ashulia, Savar, organized a protest march and rally demanding justice for a recent terrorist attack by the group "Students for Sovereignty" on agitating indigenous students at the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) building. They also called for the reinstatement of the word 'Adivasi' in school textbooks.
The demonstration, held under the banner of Indigenous Workers-People Ashulia, took place on Friday around 3:30 PM. Protesters marched from the new DEPZ zone in Ashulia to the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway, culminating in a brief rally in front of the Ashulia Press Club.
Participants carried festoons and placards with slogans such as:
Ensure the land rights of indigenous people
Proper and swift implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Agreement
Guarantee social security for indigenous women
Finalize the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council rules
Stop land grabbing
Bangladesh must embrace multi-ethnic identity, not a single-nation concept
Speakers at the rally, including Ratan Bijoy, Anand Bikash Chakma, Anil Chakma, Shanto Chakma, and Soumitra Chakma, demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers. They also urged the government to restore the indigenous terminology in educational materials.
