Chapainawabganj, Jan 18 (V7N) — Tensions flared at the Kiranganj border in Chapainawabganj today after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and locals reportedly entered Bangladeshi territory and cut down mango trees. The incident led to a confrontation that resulted in the injury of at least five Bangladeshi farmers due to a hand grenade explosion allegedly launched from the Indian side.
The situation unfolded on Saturday morning when locals noticed the BSF and Indian nationals entering the Bangladeshi side of the border to destroy mango trees. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel and residents of Kiranganj confronted them, sparking a heated clash.
During the standoff, the BSF reportedly fired tear gas and grenades, injuring five farmers. However, the strong resistance from BGB forces and locals forced the BSF to retreat.
In response to the incident, additional BGB troops have been deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent further escalation. Local sources report heightened tensions on both sides of the border.
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred. Recently, tensions also arose at the Chouka border over the BSF's construction of a barbed wire fence in no-man's land, adding to the strained relations in the region.
Efforts to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of border residents are ongoing.
