Rangamati, Jan 23, (V7N) - Despite administrative decisions, those involved in the July attack on students protesting against discrimination remain unpunished at Rangamati Medical College. More than a month and a half after the incident, the college authorities have yet to implement the decisions. Students, who were victims of the assault, have raised concerns about the protection of those involved in the attack, accusing the authorities of shielding the perpetrators.
The issue has caused growing frustration among the students of Rangamati Medical College, who have demanded immediate action against the attackers. During the July protests, members of the Chhatra League, led by Ayad Sharif Siraj, the general secretary of the student wing, along with outsiders, were involved in violent attacks on students. Following this, the college administration formed an investigation committee to address the allegations of assault and misconduct.
In early December 2024, the committee confirmed the involvement of Ayad Sharif Siraj and five other students in the attack. The committee recommended action against them, including expulsion from the college’s academic activities and hostel. The six individuals involved are: Ayad Sharif Siraj (2019-2020 batch, roll-16), Vikram Aditya Chakma (2020-2021 batch, roll-41), Imtiaz Hossain (2021-2022 batch, roll-32), Sing Sing E Mong Marma (2022-2023 batch, roll-42), Abhijit Kumar Baidya (2022-2023 batch, roll-34), and Srijon Kanti De (2022-2023 batch, roll-13).
The academic council took action, expelling Ayad Sharif Siraj for two years from all academic activities and permanently removing him from the student hostel. The committee found that Siraj was responsible for instigating disorder in the college, threatening students, attempting to attack a sixth-batch student with outsiders, and participating in attacks on other students in the hostel.
The investigation also confirmed that the five accomplices played a role in hindering the protests and obstructing the participation of students in the anti-discrimination movement. As a result, they were also expelled from the hostel for three months. A notice regarding these actions was signed by the Principal of Rangamati Medical College, Dr. Preeti Proshun Boroa, on December 9, 2024, and was supposed to be implemented immediately. However, more than a month later, no significant action has been taken.
Students who were victims of the assault have expressed their frustration, saying that despite being informed, the authorities have failed to implement the decision. They also accused the college administration of protecting the perpetrators, some of whom have continued to threaten and harass students. The notice regarding their punishment was not displayed on the college notice board, and it remained confidential. Recently, these accused individuals have continued to intimidate students and engage in activities in support of the fallen government.
Students have pointed out that the Principal of Rangamati Medical College, Dr. Preeti Proshun Boroa, who is an active member of the pro-Awami League doctor’s association, is allegedly protecting Chhatra League members involved in the violence.
When contacted, Dr. Habibul Islam, the coordinator of the medical college hostel, expressed that he was unaware of the situation and promised to look into it. However, when asked why the academic decision had not been implemented, he apologized and said that he would address the matter.
On the other hand, when asked why no action had been taken against those involved in the assault after a month and a half, the Principal, Dr. Preeti Proshun Boroa, responded, "Since exams are ongoing, they may not have been expelled yet. We will take action once the exams are over."
