Feni, July 12 (V7N) - Severe flooding in Feni has worsened as water pours into new areas from 22 breaches in the Muhuri, Kahuya, and Silonia river embankments. Since Thursday afternoon, an additional 10 villages have been inundated, further aggravating the ongoing disaster. As on Friday morning, the total number of affected villages across the Parshuram, Fulgazi, Chhagolnaiya, and Sadar districts has reached 112, escalating the suffering of the residents.
Meanwhile, heavy rains have finally subsided in Noakhali after five continuous days, but the water level continues to recede slowly. Thousands of families remain stranded in several areas including Maijdi, Subarnachar, Begumganj, Companyganj, and Kabirhat.
Among the newly flooded areas in Feni, four villages belong to Feni Sadar, five to Chhagolnaiya, and one to Daganbhua. The water levels in Parshuram and Fulgazi have slightly decreased. However, the flooding has resulted in a death in Fulgazi, where a local person drowned while fishing.
Although water has receded in some areas, many residents remain stranded. Electricity supply has been disrupted in five of the affected upazilas, and traffic has resumed in some parts of the Feni-Parshuram highway as water levels have started to drop.
As of Friday morning, approximately 9,200 people are taking shelter in 82 designated flood relief centers across the district. By Thursday night, the army and volunteers had rescued 18 people, including pregnant women and the sick, from the worst-hit areas of Parshuram and Fulgazi. As the water level subsides, some people are returning to their homes, though new areas in Feni Sadar and Chhagolnaiya are now facing flooding.
In Feni's Fajilpur and Motbi unions, as well as several villages in Chhagolnaiya’s Pathan Nagar union, floodwaters have submerged homes, agricultural lands, and hundreds of fish ponds. The local residents are enduring extreme hardship as the water continues to rise.
The government has mobilized the military, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and local volunteer organizations to assist in relief efforts. The Water Development Board has announced plans to repair the embankments and halt the flooding once the breaches are sealed.
District Commissioner Saiful Islam assured that relief efforts are ongoing with the cooperation of all stakeholders. He confirmed that food provisions are being provided to the 9,200 people currently sheltered in the relief centers, and more efforts are underway to address the needs of the affected population.
