Dhaka, Feb 15 (V7N) — The Government of India has lifted its ban on wheat exports after nearly four years, according to a notification issued by the Indian Commerce Department on Friday (February 13). Traders are optimistic that this move could soon resume wheat imports.
Background of the Ban
India had imposed the export ban on May 13, 2022, citing rising domestic wheat prices as the reason. Following the ban, wheat imports through land ports were halted, affecting regional trade, including Bangladesh.
Market Response
Importers report that, currently, domestic wheat prices in India remain lower than international rates, limiting immediate import opportunities. However, they expect fresh wheat supplies to enter the market in the coming days, which could reduce prices and allow imports to resume.
This development is being closely watched by neighboring countries dependent on Indian wheat supplies, as the ban lift may impact market stability and trade flows across South Asia.
