PABNA, Feb 26–28, 2026 (V7N) - Nine young men from different districts were allegedly lured to Greece but instead held captive in Iran, where they faced brutal torture and ransom demands. Families said they paid Tk 2 lakh each to broker Alamgir Hossain of Khidirpur village, Atgharia, Pabna. Victims reported being detained for three months and forced to call relatives for an additional Tk 7 lakh under torture. They demanded exemplary punishment against the trafficking gang. Police said legal action would follow if a complaint is filed.
A violent clash erupted during tender submissions for a market lease in Chatmohar, leaving Jamaat leaders injured. Jamaat-e-Islami Upazila Ameer Maulana Abdul Hamid filed a case against nine BNP leaders, including Krishak Dal member secretary Atiqur Rahman Sacchu. Witnesses said BNP activists attacked Jamaat leaders during tender submission. BNP leaders denied involvement, calling the case a “conspiracy.” Local MP Maulana Ali Asgar condemned the attack and urged administrative action.
In Bhangura, police allegedly beat two relatives of a bailed accused after failing to arrest him. Victims Md. Roni Hossain and his wife Swapna Khatun were hospitalized. Family members claimed police broke into their home and assaulted them after accused Abdur Rahim Rubel fled. Police denied the allegations, saying no bail papers had reached the station and that officers were injured during a scuffle.
A shocking double murder occurred in Ishwardi, where Sufia Khatun (65) was found dead in her courtyard and her granddaughter Jamila Akhtar (15) was later discovered naked in a mustard field. Police suspect Jamila may have been raped before being killed. The bodies were sent to Pabna General Hospital for autopsy. Investigations are underway to determine the motive and perpetrators.
These incidents highlight growing concerns in Pabna over human trafficking, political violence, alleged police misconduct, and violent crime. Authorities have pledged investigations, while victims and families demand justice and stronger measures to protect citizens.
