PABNA, March 1, 2026 (V7N) - Police have unraveled the mystery behind the brutal murder of Sufia Begum (65) and her granddaughter Jamila Akhter Setu (15) in Ishwardi Upazila, Pabna. Within 24 hours of investigation, law enforcement arrested Shariful Islam (30), Jamila’s uncle, who confessed to the crime.

Superintendent of Police Anwar Zahid disclosed details at a press briefing Sunday afternoon. Shariful admitted he had an “evil eye” on Jamila and made inappropriate proposals. When his grandmother Sufia opposed him, he struck her fatally with a wooden stick. He then attacked Jamila with a bamboo stick and hammer, dragged her to a nearby mustard field, raped her, and left her dead.

The murders occurred late Friday night. Initially, police recovered Sufia’s body at the entrance of her home and Jamila’s naked body in a field the next morning. A case was filed by Sufia’s daughter Marjina Khatun against unknown assailants. Using local intelligence and technology, detectives identified Shariful as the perpetrator and arrested him from his home.

Police seized the murder weapons — a hammer, bamboo stick, and wooden baton — along with a mobile phone. Another suspect, Rabbi Mondal, was released after questioning.

SP Zahid described the incident as heinous, assuring that Shariful will be produced before court. The confession has brought clarity to a crime that shocked the community, leaving residents demanding justice for Jamila and her grandmother.
