TEKNAF, March 5, (V7N) — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has successfully recovered a high-powered submachine gun (SMG) and a significant cache of ammunition during a special operation in the border region of Teknaf. The recovery took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Keora Bagan area, a dense mangrove forest adjacent to the Naf River under the Jimangkhali Border Outpost (BOP).
The operation was led by Lieutenant Colonel Md. Zahirul Islam, Commander of the Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), following specific intelligence regarding the movement of armed insurgent groups or terrorists in the frontier area.
Seizure Details
During a meticulous "combing search" of the rugged terrain between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, BGB personnel discovered the following items abandoned in the forest:
Weapon: One Myanmar-made Submachine Gun (SMG).
Ammunition: 31 rounds of fresh, live ammunition.
Hardware: 13 magazines.
Official Statement
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Zahirul Islam confirmed that while the armed individuals managed to flee into the deep forest or across the border upon sensing the BGB's presence, the recovery significantly disrupts potential criminal activities in the region.
"BGB remains on high alert to neutralize any terrorist threats and prevent smuggling along the border. We have strengthened our intelligence network to ensure the sovereignty and security of our frontier," said the Battalion Commander.
Security Context
The recovery comes amidst heightened tensions along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. This operation follows a similar high-profile raid in January where 64 BGB recovered over 50 landmine pressure plates in the Ulubonia area. The frequency of such recoveries underscores the persistent challenge of cross-border arms trafficking and the presence of armed factions in the Cox’s Bazar district.
The seized SMG and ammunition have been handed over to the Teknaf Model Police Station for further forensic analysis and legal processing.
