RAJSHAHI, Mar 11, (V7N) – Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar has cautioned that the current period is highly dangerous for fire incidents, urging citizens to remain vigilant while also highlighting the importance of preventing man‑made disasters alongside natural ones.
Speaking as chief guest at a discussion marking National Disaster Preparedness Day 2026, held Tuesday at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, Afia Akhtar said disasters are not limited to cyclones, floods, or epidemics. “If we as humans do not get proper education and do not have morality, then the disasters that will arise will severely affect us in the future,” she remarked.
She pointed to modern challenges such as children’s addiction to the internet, food adulteration, and moral decline as examples of man‑made disasters. “The way our children are addicted to the internet is a man‑made disaster of the modern era. It has a far‑reaching impact on morality, behavior, and sociality. Due to lack of morality, we do not refrain from adulterating or poisoning food. These are also disasters and their prevention is essential,” she said.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that while the government provides relief such as tin sheets and Tk 5,000 to citizens for disaster preparedness, awareness is equally vital. “This assistance is not enough. Therefore, we have to be aware. If citizens are aware, it is possible to get some relief from various natural disasters,” she added.
The program, held under the theme “We will fight for disaster preparedness, build a Bangladesh of youth”, was presided over by Md. Abdul Hai Sarkar, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer. Among those present were Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Sabur Ali, Deputy Director of District Information Office Nafeala Nasreen, District Primary Education Officer A.K.M. Anwar Hossain, Senior Station Officer of Rajshahi Fire Service Enayet ul Haque, representatives of the Red Crescent, and students from various institutions.
