Kalapara, June 29 (V7N)- A citizen assembly was held in Kalapara, Patuakhali, demanding uninterrupted electricity supply and the freeing of canals, beels, and waterbodies from encroachment.

The assembly took place on Saturday at 11 AM at Manoharipatry in Surendramohan Chowdhury Road in the municipal town, organized by "Nagorik Udyog" Kalapara. The event was presided over by Comrade Nasir Talukdar, secretary of the Khapupara branch of the Communist Party of Bangladesh.

Other speakers included former general secretary of Kalapara Upazila Awami League Md. Fazlur Rahman Sanu Sikdar, veteran teacher Amal Karmakar, teacher Jisan Haider Alamgir, general secretary of the United Citizens' Rights Alliance Kalapara, Gautam Chandra Howlader, and organizational secretary Md. Rasel Mir, among others.

The speakers stated that the people of Kalapara provided land for the Payra Thermal Power Plant, yet for more than a month, there have been hours-long power outages every day. Additionally, the historic Jin Canal in the Chingaria, Orphanage, and Rahmatpur areas of Kalapara municipal town is occupied by a few miscreants, obstructing the normal water flow and causing the canal to lose its original form. They urgently called on the authorities to take action to free the canal from encroachment.
