Khagrachari, Aug 20 (V7N) - Continuous heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in the low-lying areas of Khagrachari District, including the city, and the upazilas of Matiranga and Dighinala, leaving 400 to 500 families stranded. The region has experienced persistent downpours for nearly three days, resulting in rising water levels in the Chengi, Feni, and Maini rivers, which have submerged homes and created severe conditions for local residents.

Since early morning, water has inundated residential areas along the Chengi, Feni, and Maini rivers, including Muslimpara, Mehedibag, Kaladeba, Ganjpara, and Thakurchhara in the district’s urban neighborhoods. The flooding has occurred three times in the past two months, causing extensive distress for thousands of people living along riverbanks and channels. The situation has worsened due to a sudden flood in the border area of Taindong in Matiranga.

The ongoing heavy rainfall has led to rising water levels in the Maini River, beginning to affect agricultural land along the riverbanks in Dighinala’s Merung and Kobakhali areas. Residents living near the Chengi and Maini rivers are increasingly worried, and the risk of landslides has risen. Shelters have been established, and efforts are underway to evacuate people from areas prone to landslides.

Khagrachari Municipality’s Executive Officer Parveen Khandakar reported that measures are being taken to rescue stranded residents and relocate them to safe shelters. Warnings are also being issued to families at risk of landslides to ensure their safety.
