In Paikgacha, Khulna, 14 villages have been submerged following a breach in the river's embankment, affecting around 15,000 people. Despite receiving relief efforts, the residents are emphasizing the need for a sustainable embankment to prevent future disasters, rather than relying on temporary aid.

Khulna, Aug 26 (V7N) - In Paikgacha, Khulna, the recent breach of an embankment has led to severe flooding, impacting 14 villages and displacing approximately 15,000 people. The incident occurred on August 21 when the embankment of the water development board's polder number 22 broke during high tide in the Kharsrota River.

Despite the efforts of local residents and officials to repair the embankment, the situation has worsened, with the river erosion extending and new areas being submerged. Villages such as Kaligar, Darul Mallik, Syed Khali, and others have been inundated, causing extensive damage to crops and fish enclosures.

Local authorities have managed to relocate around 2,000 individuals to temporary shelters in schools, but many are still without adequate refuge, opting to stay in high places or makeshift shelters. The affected villagers are prioritizing the construction of a durable embankment over temporary relief, emphasizing their need for a long-term solution rather than short-term aid.

The impact on agriculture has been significant, with 950 hectares of Aman paddy fields and 25 hectares of vegetable crops destroyed. Additionally, 400 fish enclosures and ponds have been lost. The Water Development Board is working to repair the embankment but is facing challenges due to the high water levels, which are hindering construction efforts.

Various organizations, including the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Bangladesh Navy, Kosot Guards, and BNP, are providing relief, but the community's focus remains on securing a sustainable solution to prevent future disasters.
