Sylhet, Sep 05 (V7N) - In Sylhet, several police officers have been implicated in cases filed by victims, primarily related to allegations of firing on students protesting against inequality. Leaders and activists of the BNP, Chhatra Dal, and Jubo Dal have accused a group of overzealous police officers of using force during the protests. These police officers were reportedly firing alongside members of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Swechchhasebak League. Despite numerous complaints and legal actions against the accused, no police officers have been arrested to date, leading to significant frustration among the complainants.
Jubail Ahmed Swapan, the convener of Ward 21 Chhatra Dal, and Chhatra Dal leader Sajan Ahmed Saju have expressed their anger and are demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the implicated police officers. They have specifically called for the arrest of DB Deputy Commissioner Tahiyat Ahmed Chowdhury, CRT Chief Shahriar Al Mamun, SI Polash Chandra Das, and other officials.
These demands have been highlighted by Umidur Rahman Umid, a former member of the Sylhet Metropolitan Jubo Dal Convener Committee, who presented their concerns to the media. As the plaintiffs are currently receiving medical treatment, Umid reported that, "Cases have been filed with specific names of the police officers after thorough investigation. However, no disciplinary action has been taken against these officers so far. Although some have been transferred, none have been arrested, which suggests that efforts might be underway to shield them."
He further stated that Swapan, Saju, their supporters, relatives, and political allies are deeply outraged. They are demanding that the involved police officers and other accused individuals be arrested immediately. If their demands are not met, they plan to organize a series of strong actions, starting with a human chain. Additional measures will be announced progressively by BNP leaders and activists.
