Rangamati, Sept 21, V7N- Around 1,500 tourists have been stranded in Sajek, a popular tourist destination, due to a 72-hour road and waterway blockade initiated by the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF), a regional tribal organization in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The group launched the protest accusing security forces of inciting communal tensions in the mountains without provocation.

Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Mrs. Shireen Akhter, confirmed the situation, stating that all tourists are safe and authorities are closely monitoring their condition. Efforts are being made to ensure their safe return once the situation improves.

Local sources report that the pro-Prasit faction of the UPDF holds significant influence from Khagrachari to Sajek. Their blockade has resulted in damaged roads, bridges, and culverts at six locations along the Dighinala to Baghaihat route, halting traffic.

Md. Yashin Arafat, from the Khagrachari jeep line, noted that 115 jeeps and 50 to 55 CNG vehicles entered Sajek on Friday but are now stuck. The protesters have set fires at various points along the road and removed planks from Bailey bridges, making travel hazardous for tourist vehicles. No vehicles have returned from Sajek due to the ongoing blockade.
