Patuakhali, Sep 26 (V7N)- Professor Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam, from the Department of Pharmacology at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PUST). His appointment was made by the order of His Excellency the President and Chancellor of the University, Mohammad Sahabuddin. The appointment was officially communicated through a notification signed by Rokhchana Begum, Deputy Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Department.

The appointment, which follows Section 10(1) of the Patuakhali Science and Technology University Act, 2001, is for a four-year term, effective from the date of joining. Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam, a distinguished academic and researcher, succeeds to lead PUST, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the fields of veterinary medicine, pharmacology, and research.

Born in Barisal's Sadar Upazila to a noble Muslim family, Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam is the son of the late philanthropist Kazi Abdul Khalek and Kazi Rabeya Begum. He completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from BAU in 1994, followed by a post-graduate degree in Pharmacology in 1998. Dr. Islam went on to earn his PhD from Kagawa University, Japan, in 2011, and later pursued post-doctoral research in Gastroenterology and Neurology at Kagawa Medical University.

Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam's illustrious career includes numerous awards and recognitions. Among them, he received the prestigious Acharya Gold Medal in 1999, the President's Medal from Kagawa University in 2011, and the Global Research Impact Recognition Award-2023 from BAURES. His outstanding contributions to research have also earned him the Best Publication Awards from the Bangladesh Agricultural University Teachers' Association in 2014, 2015, and 2023.

He has held key academic positions at BAU, including Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. Dr. Islam has also been recognized with various international fellowships and travel grants, including the JSPS Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship and awards from Pfizer Limited, Japan.

The appointment of Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam as Vice-Chancellor is seen as a significant step in furthering the academic and research ambitions of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology.
