Savar, Feb 18 (V7N) – Allegations have surfaced against Rhamizur Rahman Chowdhury Ruma, the chairman elected under the Awami League government, for attempting to take control of Mohini Mohan High School in Dhamrai. The accused chairman was involved in a heated argument with local residents during a meeting to form the school's ad-hoc committee.
The incident came to light when local residents spoke to the media on Monday, February 17, in Sutipara Union, Dhamrai. Sources revealed that Rhamizur Rahman arrived at the meeting on Sunday afternoon with a group of 15-20 motorcycles and several private cars. He allegedly attempted to become the president of the committee. As residents arrived at the school, they found out what was happening and confronted the chairman. At this point, Rhamizur reportedly left the meeting and slapped a young man outside. Following this, the chairman departed after local residents protested his actions.
Rhamizur Rahman, who entered politics during the tenure of former MP Benazir Ahmed, is known for his affiliations with the Awami League. He has been seen at various events with Awami League leaders, and photos of him attending their gatherings have surfaced on social media. Furthermore, it is reported that he campaigned for the Awami League's "Boat" symbol during the 12th National Parliamentary Elections. Allegedly, he has also prevented union council members from performing duties unless they supported the "Boat" symbol.
Abu Taher Sardar, a member of Sutipara Union’s Ward 4, claimed that after not supporting the "Boat" in the last parliamentary election, Rhamizur Rahman blocked him from any work related to the union's development. He also accused Rhamizur of insulting him repeatedly.
Mohammad Foto Mia, President of Sutipara Union BNP, stated that the chairman wanted to control the school’s committee entirely. When locals intervened, there was an argument. He added that although Rhamizur claimed to be a BNP supporter, his alliances with the Awami League made him a part of their ranks. Foto Mia emphasized that BNP did not participate in elections during the dictatorship, but Rhamizur was seen aligning with the Awami League for his personal gain.
Shamsul Islam, General Secretary of Dhamrai Upazila BNP, criticized the chairman’s ongoing ties with the Awami League, stating that Rhamizur had no official position within the BNP anymore. He noted that Rhamizur had not participated in any political movements or struggles with the BNP and had instead worked with the Awami League for his benefit.
Shamsul Haque, the assistant headmaster of Mohini Mohan High School, stated that he was unaware of the details of the dispute, only confirming that a meeting had taken place regarding the formation of the committee, and disturbances occurred outside.
Despite multiple attempts to contact Rhamizur Rahman Chowdhury for comment, he did not respond to calls.
