Mumbai, Nov 24 (V7N)-Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away at his residence in Juhu, Mumbai on Monday morning. He was 89 years old, confirmed by several Indian media outlets.
Initially, reports of his death caused confusion, as fake news about his demise had circulated recently. The news was confirmed when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences on his X handle, saying, “With the passing of Dharmendra ji, a chapter in the world of Indian cinema has come to an end. He was an iconic figure in the film fraternity. I offer my condolences to his family, friends and fans at this difficult time.”
Film producer Karan Johar also paid tribute, calling him “the epitome of the ideal hero of mainstream cinema… a true legend. We will miss you deeply.”
Dharmendra had been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai just 12 days ago after treatment for respiratory issues. He was scheduled to celebrate his 90th birthday on December 8.
Born in Ludhiana district in 1935, Dharmendra debuted in 1960 with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’. He rose to fame in the 1960s with romantic hits like ‘Bandini’, ‘Ai Milan Ki Bela’, and ‘Khamoshi’. Critically acclaimed for ‘Hakikat’ (1965), he cemented his commercial success with ‘Phool Aur Pathar’ (1966).
