Dhaka, Oct 15 (V7N) — Awami League presidium member and former Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister, Farooq Khan, has been detained by law enforcement authorities. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him late on Monday night from his residence in the Cantonment area of Dhaka.

Following his arrest, Farooq Khan was taken to the Detective Branch office, confirmed Mohammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the Public Relations Department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Farooq Khan faces multiple charges, including involvement in casualties connected to the anti-discrimination student movement. A murder case was lodged against him following the tragic killing of Suman Islam, a 23-year-old madrasa student, and his mother on September 20.

Kazoli Lt. filed the case, naming not only Farooq Khan but also Sheikh Hasina, the president of Awami League and former prime minister, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajib Wazed Joy, security adviser Major General (retd) Tariq Ahmed Siddique, and 388 others. The case was registered at the Ashulia police station in Savar.

Farooq Khan, a former military officer, entered politics after leaving the army. He has been elected six times as a Member of Parliament from the Gopalganj-1 constituency.

In the government formed by the Awami League following their victory in the January 2024 elections, Farooq Khan was reappointed as the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, a portfolio he previously held from 2011 to 2013.
