Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N) – Former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, Atiqul Islam, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Gowanda Police from the Mohakhali area in the capital on Wednesday evening. The authorities confirmed the arrest but did not immediately disclose the charges or case linked to the arrest.

Atiqul Islam, a prominent figure in Dhaka politics, had served as the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) following the death of his predecessor, Anisul Haque, in 2017. After legal complications, he won the by-election in 2019 with support from the Awami League. He was re-elected the following year on the party’s nomination.

His arrest follows the recent political shake-up in Bangladesh after the fall of the Awami League government. On August 19, the interim government removed the mayors of 12 city corporations across the country, including Atiqul Islam.

Before his mayoral tenure, Atiqul Islam was a key figure in the garment sector, serving as president of multiple organizations including the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The public awaits further details regarding the nature of the charges leading to his arrest.
