Dhaka, Oct 18 (V7N) – BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today urged the interim government to take urgent and pragmatic steps to address the escalating prices of essential goods, which are putting a heavy financial burden on the public.

Speaking virtually at a discussion program, he emphasized the need to dismantle the market syndicate that was established during the previous regime, which he blamed for contributing to the price hikes.

"People from various walks of life, especially those with low incomes and small businesses, are facing severe difficulties due to the sharp rise in essential commodity prices," said the BNP leader.

He added that verbal reassurances are insufficient while people struggle with insufficient food. "I call on the interim government to prioritize lowering commodity prices immediately and bring relief to the public," Tarique said.

He expressed concern that commodity prices have exceeded the purchasing power of ordinary citizens. However, he believes that while it may be difficult to dismantle the market syndicate, it is possible with strong determination and the right measures.

The event was organized by the Ziaur Rahman Foundation at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, to commemorate its silver jubilee.

Tarique also warned that allies of the former autocratic regime are still conspiring to create obstacles for the government and destabilize its efforts. He pointed out that the government appears disorganized, lacking a clear priority agenda.

Conflicting statements from various government advisers regarding the upcoming election have caused public confusion, he added.

During the program, Zubaida Rahman, an adviser to the Ziaur Rahman Foundation and wife of Tarique Rahman, also spoke virtually. She congratulated the foundation on its milestone and encouraged its members to continue working for the betterment of humanity.

"I hope the Ziaur Rahman Foundation will set an example in serving humanity," Zubaida Rahman said.
