Dhaka, Dec 29 (V7N) — Dhaka Medical College authorities today handed over the mortal remains of Haris Chowdhury, a heroic freedom fighter and former political secretary to ex-Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, to his daughter, Barrister Samira Tanjin Chowdhury.

The remains will be transported to Sylhet by air ambulance after noon, where preparations have been made for his burial with state honors. A funeral prayer is scheduled at the Shahi Eidgah Maidan in Sylhet at 2 pm, followed by his burial in his birthplace, Kanaighat, Sylhet.

Haris Chowdhury passed away on September 3, 2021, but his identity was concealed during the Awami League government. He was buried under the name "Professor Mahmudur Rahman" on the premises of Jamia Khatamunnabiyyin Madrasa in Birulia, Savar.

Following a High Court order initiated by a writ petition filed by his daughter, Samira Tanjin, the body was exhumed under the supervision of officials. DNA tests conducted by the CID confirmed the remains belonged to Haris Chowdhury.

Speaking to reporters after receiving the remains, Barrister Samira expressed gratitude to the interim government for enabling her family to finally honour her father’s memory.

Haris Chowdhury, remembered as a courageous freedom fighter, will be laid to rest with full state honors in the soil of Sylhet, bringing closure to his family and admirers.
