Dhaka, Jan 02 (V7N)— BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has announced that the party will re-evaluate the Assam agreement with India if it comes to power. He made this statement during a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's political office in Gulshan on Wednesday, where he also highlighted allegations of widespread corruption in the power sector during Sheikh Hasina's tenure.
The press conference, attended by senior BNP leaders, focused on what the party described as systematic looting in the electricity sector under the Awami League government. BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku presented a detailed written statement outlining these allegations.
Tuku claimed that over one lakh crore taka had been siphoned off from the power sector in the name of capacity charges during the Awami League's 15-year rule. He alleged that the ruling party turned the electricity sector into a business venture for looting public funds.
Mirza Fakhrul accused the Awami League of exploiting political narratives to divert attention from their mismanagement and corruption. “If we don't speak out about the Awami League's corruption and the destruction they have caused to the country, people will gradually forget everything,” he said.
The BNP Secretary General reiterated his party’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, particularly in sectors such as energy, which directly affect the lives of citizens.
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan was also present at the press conference, lending his support to the party’s call for reforms and accountability in the power sector.
The announcement signals the BNP's intent to make corruption and governance key issues in its political agenda as it prepares for the next general elections.
