Dinajpur, Jan 03 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasised the need for unity to create a prosperous and democratic Bangladesh. Speaking as the chief guest at the Golden Jubilee and Meritorious Service Award ceremony of the Economics Department at Dinajpur Government College on Friday, he reflected on the country's journey since independence and its current challenges.
"Even though the democratic war is over, we have failed in the war of unity," Mirza Fakhrul remarked. "Everyone must rise above narrow-mindedness and work together to build a true, beautiful, happy, prosperous, and loving Bangladesh."
The BNP leader highlighted the lack of democratic practices and institutions in the country, saying, "An attempt has been made to kill democracy here. Political parties have been engaged in conflict, but through tolerance and democratic practice, we can achieve rights and true democracy."
Reflecting on the nation's history, he said, "We fought in 1971 and again in the democratic war. While that war has ended, the fight for unity remains. At this age, I feel we have failed to build the unity necessary to move the country forward together."
He criticised what he described as the rise of fascism, stating, "Fascism seeks to seize all state power, creating a climate of fear so no one dares to speak out. By Allah's mercy, we have come out of that place, and a new opportunity has been created. We will turn Bangladesh into a democratic state again."
Mirza Fakhrul acknowledged the sacrifices of political activists, noting that over 800 BNP leaders and workers have been disappeared, and millions have faced false cases and inhuman torture. "Despite this, new possibilities have emerged. It is now up to us to seize this opportunity and build a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh," he concluded.
The event, marking 50 years of the Economics Department, brought together students, alumni, and political leaders to celebrate achievements and discuss the future of the nation.
