Sirajganj, Feb 08 (V7N) – The Awami League office in Shahjadpur Upazila of Sirajganj was demolished in a midnight attack, with murals and portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also destroyed in the process. The incident occurred around midnight on Friday (February 7) in Dariapur Bazar, escalating tensions in the region.
According to reports, the office was brought down using a blast machine, and the vandalism did not stop there. Following the initial destruction, attackers proceeded from the upazila square, targeting other Awami League offices and defacing murals and portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at multiple locations across the city.
Shahjadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aslam Ali confirmed the demolition, stating, “The Upazila Awami League office was targeted during the anti-discrimination student movement. Whatever parts of the office remained after the initial attack were completely demolished at midnight.”
This incident follows a wave of violence earlier in the week. On Thursday (February 6), an angry mob vandalized, looted, and set fire to the home of Hasibur Rahman Swapan, a former Awami League Member of Parliament from Sirajganj-6 (Shahjadpur) constituency and former Industries Minister. The attack took place in the rehabilitation area of Sadar Upazila.
The recent spate of violence coincides with rising tensions amid the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which has sparked protests and confrontations across various regions of Bangladesh. Authorities are on high alert as investigations continue into the attacks.
