Dhaka, Apr 17 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has emphasized that national elections must be held only after ensuring necessary reforms and justice. However, he also warned that the process must not be unnecessarily delayed.
He made these remarks at a press conference held at a hotel in the capital on Thursday.
“We have no objection if the interim government promptly completes the reforms and moves forward with elections,” said the Jamaat chief. “The European Union has been clearly informed that without proper reforms, no election in Bangladesh will be meaningful. Elections must be conducted in a way that ensures legitimacy and avoids controversy.”
Addressing speculation regarding his recent meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in London, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman clarified, “I traveled from Belgium to London only to inquire about her health. However, political matters were also discussed during the visit.”
Regarding his recent European tour, the Jamaat Amir stated that the main objective of his visit to Brussels was to enhance ties with the European Union. During the meetings, key topics such as politics, economy, trade and commerce, and the Rohingya crisis were discussed.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s remarks come at a time when the country is navigating a crucial transitional period under the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, which aims to implement broad structural reforms before the next general election.
