Mongla, July 19 (V7N) — Police in Mongla have arrested Sheikh Al Mamun, General Secretary of the municipal unit of the Jubo League, during a special operation named “Devil Hunt.” The arrest took place on Saturday night in the Muslimpara area of Mongla municipality.
Sheikh Al Mamun, a controversial local political figure, faces multiple serious allegations, including involvement in ship smuggling, extortion, bid manipulation, drug and gambling operations, and illegal sand trading. According to locals, Mamun had established a reign of terror in both Mongla town and surrounding upazilas, allegedly under the protection and political influence of his maternal uncle, Sheikh Abdul Rahman, a former municipal mayor and current president of the Mongla municipal unit of the ruling Awami League.
Residents of the area have reportedly expressed relief following Mamun’s arrest, with several saying that his unchecked influence and alleged criminal activities had long disrupted public safety and peace.
Speaking to reporters, Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Anisur Rahman confirmed the arrest, stating, “Sheikh Al Mamun was detained during the ‘Devil Hunt’ operation. He will be produced before the Bagerhat court on Sunday morning and sent to jail.”
Mamun’s arrest is being seen as a significant move in the broader effort by law enforcement to crack down on political protectionism and organized crime in the region. The “Devil Hunt” initiative, aimed at dismantling criminal networks linked to local political figures, is expected to continue in the coming days.
This development marks a rare instance of accountability being enforced against individuals with deep political connections, and it has been welcomed by citizens who have long demanded stronger action against corruption and criminality within the political sphere.
