Madaripur, Oct 26 (V7N) — Police have arrested Abu Said Sardar, also known as Likhan (30), the general secretary of the now-banned organization Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Kalkini municipal unit, on charges related to two cases filed under the Explosives Act and for attacking law enforcement officers.

Sardar, son of Harunur Rashid from South Gopalpur village in Kalkini municipality, was arrested on Saturday afternoon during a special operation conducted at Gopalpur Hat area, based on a tip-off, police said.

According to case records, on October 28, 2024, when a police team went to Sardar’s residence to apprehend him, he and his associates allegedly launched a sudden attack on the officers. A case was subsequently filed against him as the prime accused in connection with the assault.

Earlier, on January 28, 2021, during a Chhatra League procession in the Mridhakandi area of Kalkini, a bomb explosion took place, leading to another case against Sardar under the Explosives Act.

Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-Charge (OC) A.K.M. Sohel Rana of Kalkini Police Station said, “He has been detained under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Besides the case for attacking police, there are two additional cases pending against him at our station. He has been sent to jail through the court.”

Police sources said the arrest followed weeks of surveillance after intelligence reports indicated that Sardar had been secretly moving between different areas of Kalkini to evade capture. Law enforcement officials have strengthened operations to trace other individuals allegedly linked to both incidents.

Authorities added that investigations are ongoing to identify any wider network or affiliation connected to the banned group’s recent subversive activities in Madaripur district.
