Rangpur, Mar 12 (V7N) – Nahid Islam, Opposition Chief Whip and convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has expressed hope that the government will initiate the process of removing the President during the upcoming session of parliament.
He made the remarks while addressing a divisional iftar mahfil organized by his party at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Stadium on Wednesday (March 11), ahead of the first session of the 13th National Parliament, which begins on Thursday (March 12).
Nahid Islam said the people of the country and the international community are closely watching the upcoming parliament session. According to him, the current parliament and government were formed through the July mass uprising, and therefore public expectations must be fulfilled.
He emphasized that the process of constitutional reform should begin immediately, expressing hope that lawmakers from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will also take oath as members of the proposed Constitutional Reform Council.
“The journey of the Constitutional Reform Council will begin from tomorrow. We hope the government will take steps for the oath-taking process and arrange a new presidential election by replacing the current president,” he said.
Nahid Islam also warned that any obstruction to the reform process would be closely observed by the public. “If there is any deviation, the people will understand who is responsible. Everyone will have to speak out from their respective positions,” he added.
Referring to the recent referendum, he said people across political lines had voted ‘yes’ for reform, making it the responsibility of parliament to implement those decisions. He added that lawmakers are committed to freeing the country from corruption, loan defaulters, extortion and terrorism through parliamentary action.
Among others present at the iftar event were NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain MP, Central Joint Convener Dr. Atiq Mujahid MP, Northern Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam, Chief Organizer Nasiruddin Patwari, Joint Chief Organizer (Northern Region) Asadullah Al Ghalib, and National Youth Force Convener Tariqul Islam, along with other central and divisional leaders.
Leaders and activists from several anti-fascist political alliances, including members of the BNP and Jamaat, also attended the gathering.
