Dhaka, July 26 – Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has accused the BNP-Jamaat alliance of orchestrating the violence and killings surrounding the recent quota reform movement in Bangladesh. Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the Awami League president's political office in Dhanmondi, Quader claimed that innocent lives were lost due to the violent actions of the alliance.
Quader emphasized that neither the police nor ordinary citizens could be involved in such killings. He disclosed that some weapons used in the violence had been recovered and investigations were ongoing. He also highlighted the barbarity of the violence, citing incidents where individuals, including a boy named Jewel and several children, were shot dead.
"We have a list of deaths... in newspapers and magazines like two hundred or a little more than two hundred," Quader said. He described the brutality of the attacks, mentioning that even people observing the violence from their windows were shot.
Quader asserted that the violence was part of a conspiracy by Jamaat-Shibir and promised a thorough investigation into each murder. He also reassured that legal actions would be taken against those responsible for the violence.
Addressing the demands of the protesting students, Quader stated that the government had issued a notification accepting all their demands. He lamented that the government was being blamed for the deaths of students while thousands of Awami League activists and police officers had been attacked.
He accused the BNP-Jamaat alliance of attempting to overthrow Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, linking their current actions to historical acts of violence and dishonesty dating back to 1971.
Quader mentioned that BNP-Jamaat and their allies were seeking an international investigation to deflect responsibility. He assured that law enforcement agencies were uncovering evidence of sabotage orchestrated by BNP-Jamaat and vowed to prevent their attempts to destabilize the government.
He urged the citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and called on party leaders and activists to use social media to expose the violence's perpetrators. Quader emphasized the need for united resistance against these forces.
Awami League presidium members Abdur Razzak, Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Joint General Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif, Organizing Secretary Ahmad Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Mirza Azam, SM Kamal Hossain, Afzal Hossain, Sujit Roy Nandi, and Office Secretary Biplab Barua were also present at the press conference.
