BNP leader Zainul Abedin Farroque has filed a case against former DB chief Harun-Or-Rashid and another official Biplob Kumar for beating him up during a hartal programme in 2011.
Farroque lodged the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station this (19 August) afternoon.
In the case statement, Farroque mentioned that the police beat him with sticks and kicked him with boots, intending to kill him.
On 6 July 2011, Farroque, the then opposition chief whip, had come under police attack in front of the parliament building when he was leading a procession during a strike called by BNP. Video footage showed Harun initiating the attack on Farroque during the scuffle on Manik Mia Avenue.
On the following day, Police had filed a case against Farroque, accusing him of obstructing government activities during the hartal hours.
The incident sparked widespread debate across the country, with the police officer's treatment of the BNP leader drawing significant criticism.
After the incident, Harun-Or-Rashid was later promoted as a deputy commissioner for the Lalbagh zone.
Later in 2013, Harun was awarded with the President Police Medal (PPM) for "beating Farroque".
"That special incident has been taken into consideration for awarding him [Rashid]," then home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir said in 2013.
