Dhaka, Sep 01 (V7N) - On Sunday, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) observed its 46th founding anniversary with a solemn tribute to its founder and former president, Ziaur Rahman. A large gathering of party leaders and activists, led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, paid their respects at Zia’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 11:30 am. They placed wreaths and offered prayers (fateha) for Zia’s departed soul and the well-being of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Despite being in high spirits following the recent decline of its long-time rival, the Awami League, BNP opted for a subdued commemoration this year. The party scaled back its originally planned extensive activities due to severe flooding in the eastern region of the country.
In the morning, BNP flags were hoisted at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan and other offices nationwide. Later in the day, a doa mahfil was held in front of the Nayapaltan central office to seek divine blessings for flood victims, those affected by recent student-led protests, and for Khaleda Zia’s swift recovery.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the BNP’s standing committee decided to cancel the previously scheduled five-day events. The funds allocated for these celebrations have been redirected to the party’s relief fund to aid flood victims.
BNP’s associated organizations and local units across the country are observing the day with respectful ceremonies, including doa mahfil, discussions, and rallies.
Since its inception 45 years ago, BNP has governed Bangladesh four times and been in opposition twice. The party has been out of power for nearly 18 years following the 1/11 political changeover.
On this occasion, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir extended their congratulations to the nation, party leaders, workers, and supporters.
