Dhaka, Sep 04 (V7N) - Haji Salim, the former Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-7 constituency, was hospitalised after falling ill while in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 12:15 PM on Tuesday, 3 September. Haji Salim was on a five-day remand in connection with the murder case of Ideal College student Khalid Hasan Saifullah.

Bachchu Mia, the in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the incident, stating that Haji Salim was brought to the hospital in an ill condition. "He was admitted to cabin number 107 of the new building," Bachchu Mia added.

The remand was granted by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aktaruzzaman's court on Monday, 2 September, following his arrest in the Bangshal area of the capital on Sunday night, 1 September. Salim was initially taken to the DB office for questioning after his arrest.

Haji Salim, a controversial figure, previously faced criticism from students during the quota reform movement, during which he sought refuge in a hospital following confrontations.

Notably, Haji Salim was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2008 in an Anti-Corruption Commission case on charges of acquiring illegal assets. However, in 2022, the High Court reduced his sentence to 10 years.

His recent arrest and subsequent remand are part of ongoing investigations into the murder of Khalid Hasan Saifullah, which has sparked public and media attention due to its high-profile nature and the involvement of a former lawmaker.
