Rajshahi, July 20 (V7N) — A tragic incident occurred in Rajshahi when 17-year-old Shahnawaz Shahria Surjo, a student of Shiroil School preparing for SSC exams, drowned in a large pond beside the Central Eidgah Ground.

The accident took place around 12:15 p.m. when Surjo and three friends went to swim in the pond located west of the Eidgah field, near the Police Officers’ Mess. While playing, Surjo, who could not swim, began to sink. One friend immediately called for help, and locals rescued him, but they were unable to find Surjo.

Upon receiving news, the Fire Service and Civil Defence’s diving team from Rajshahi headquarters arrived swiftly. After nearly half an hour of searching, they retrieved Surjo’s body and rushed him to the emergency department at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by attending doctors.

Surjo lived in Baliya Pukur Choto Bottala under Boalia Thana, Rajshahi. His father is Ishak Ali. The news of his death has cast a shadow of grief over the family.

Surjo’s younger brother, Rohan, shared that Surjo did not know how to swim, but he went into the pond with his friends on that hot afternoon.
