Jhalokathi, July 20 (V7N) – The Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, Abdelwahab Saadani, visited the renowned floating guava market and orchards in Bhimruli and Atghor Kuriana under Jhalokathi district on Sunday morning. During his visit, he observed guava cultivation practices firsthand and interacted with local farmers to better understand the region’s agricultural dynamics.

Ambassador Saadani expressed his admiration for the natural beauty and cultural uniqueness of the floating markets. He remarked that Algeria does not produce guavas domestically and highlighted the potential for future guava exports from Bangladesh. He stated his intention to initiate discussions with the Algerian government and relevant ministries to explore the possibilities of import cooperation.

Describing Bhimruli and Atghor Kuriana as promising agricultural zones, the ambassador acknowledged the significance of the floating markets not only as a cultural heritage but also as a vital component of Bangladesh’s rural economy. He emphasized the aesthetic and economic value these practices add to the country’s agricultural landscape.

Accompanying the ambassador during the visit were Mizanur Rahman, Chairman of Fortune Group, and A.K.M. Saidad Hossain, Secretary of the Algerian Embassy in Bangladesh.

Speaking to reporters, Mizanur Rahman said the visit was part of an initiative to assess the feasibility of guava exports to Algeria. Should there be a positive response from Algerian authorities, Fortune Group is prepared to invest in preservation and processing facilities to support sustainable guava export from the region.

The floating guava market of Bhimruli, active during the monsoon season, is one of the most vibrant seasonal trade hubs in southern Bangladesh, where hundreds of farmers navigate boats filled with fresh guavas through interconnected canals. This traditional market not only sustains the livelihoods of local farmers but also attracts domestic and international visitors due to its picturesque setting and unique cultural value.

The ambassador’s visit marks a potential milestone in diversifying Bangladesh’s agricultural exports and strengthening bilateral trade relations with Algeria.
