Dhaka, Nov 23 (V7N) – A tragic accident in Sreepur, Gazipur, claimed the lives of three Islamic University of Technology (IUT) students and injured at least 10 others when their picnic bus collided with a high-voltage power line on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 8:30 am near a china factory in Udaikhali village under Telihati union. Sreepur police immediately responded to the scene.

The victims have been identified as Shakib, Mahin, and Mozammel, all third-year students of IUT. Details about the injured students remain unavailable.

Details of the Incident
According to locals, 460 third-year IUT students, based in Gazipur’s Board Bazar area, were on their way to Mati Maya Resort for a picnic, traveling in six BRTC double-decker buses and three microbuses.

As one of the buses reached Udaikhali village, it came into contact with an 11,000-volt power line while tilting slightly to give way to another vehicle. Witnesses reported that the bus became electrified, causing chaos among passengers.

Shamim Ahmed, a local witness, described the scene: “Smoke started rising from the bus, and students screamed for help. Using dry bamboo sticks, we managed to rescue many. Unfortunately, three students were already dead. We immediately contacted the electricity office to cut power and prevent further casualties.”

Two students died instantly from electrocution, and a third succumbed while attempting to exit the bus.

Casualties and Response
Several students sustained burn injuries on their hands, legs, and faces.

Khandakar Mahmudul Hasan, deputy general manager of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity, confirmed that the accident involved an 11,000-volt line, noting that the bus had tilted while giving way to another vehicle.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zainal Abedin Mandal of Sreepur police stated: “Three deaths due to electrocution have been confirmed. The injured are receiving medical attention.”

Campus Grief
The tragedy has left the IUT campus and victims’ families in mourning, casting a shadow of sorrow over the institution.
