Bhola, Jan 19 (V7N) — Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Shipping, has warned that strict action will be taken against lessees if allegations of overcharging passengers at wharfs are proven. He stated that leases will be cancelled in such cases to ensure accountability and fairness.
The advisor made this announcement while addressing reporters during his visit to the Elisha Launch Ghat in Bhola on Sunday morning.
“We were once heavily dependent on water transport. Despite the construction of many bridges, water transport remains crucial. Authorities must ensure that passengers are not harassed,” said Brigadier General Hossain.
He emphasised that no additional fare beyond the prescribed rate should be charged in water transport. “If such allegations are substantiated, action will be taken against those responsible,” he assured.
The visit was also attended by BIWTA Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mustafa, Bhola Deputy Commissioner Azad Jahan, and other officials.
This move reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of passengers and maintaining transparency in water transport services.
