Dhaka, Feb 10 (V7N) – The interim government has officially commenced state financial assistance for the families of those injured and martyred during the July Uprising. The program was formally inaugurated by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at a ceremony held on Monday morning at the Chief Advisor's office in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

At the event, financial checks were distributed to 21 families of martyred individuals and 7 injured participants of the uprising. The ceremony was attended by several key government figures, including Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruk-e-Azam, Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum, Information and Broadcasting Advisor Nahid Islam, and Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman.

Emotional Tributes and Government Promises

Members of three martyred families and three injured fighters shared their emotional experiences, demanding justice for the murders, state honors, financial support, and rehabilitation. Their heartfelt testimonies highlighted the deep scars left by the tragic events of the uprising.

In his address, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized the immeasurable contribution of the martyrs and injured to the nation's history. "Their contribution cannot be measured in any way due to their sacrifices," he said, referring to them as 'living history'.

"A nation that cannot remember history cannot develop as a nation," Dr. Yunus remarked, underscoring the importance of honoring those who fought for the country's democratic ideals.

He also announced that from today onwards, the families of the martyrs and the injured will officially become part of the government, signifying institutional recognition. However, he stressed that society also holds a responsibility towards them beyond government support.

Justice and Rehabilitation

Addressing the demand for justice, Dr. Yunus stated, "Immediate trials can become injustices. Our goal is to ensure justice. Those who are guilty will be handed over to the law, and arrangements will be made for the rehabilitation of those who are not guilty."

He urged all citizens to avoid violence and work together to build a beautiful country, emphasizing the government's commitment to peaceful nation-building.

Comprehensive Financial Support and Recognition

As part of the government’s decision, the martyrs will be honored as 'July Martyrs', and the injured will be recognized as 'July Warriors'. The following financial support and benefits were outlined:

  • Martyr Families:

    • A one-time grant of 3 million taka per family.
      • 1 million taka will be provided in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
      • 2 million taka will be provided in the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
    • A monthly allowance of 20,000 taka.
    • Priority in government and semi-government jobs.
  • Injured Warriors (Two Categories):

    • Category A (Seriously Injured):
      • One-time payment of 5 lakh taka.
        • 2 lakh taka in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
        • 3 lakh taka in the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
      • Monthly allowance of 20,000 taka.
      • Lifelong treatment in government hospitals.
      • Job-assisting training and rehabilitation facilities.
    • Category B (Less Severe Injuries):
      • One-time payment of 3 lakh taka.
        • 1 lakh taka in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
        • 2 lakh taka in the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
      • Monthly allowance of 15,000 taka.
      • Priority in government/semi-government jobs.

Government's Progress on Recognition

The government has already published a gazetted list of 834 martyrs, and a list of the injured has been prepared, with publication expected soon.

At the event, Advisor Nahid Islam acknowledged delays in the process, stating, "The government has worked sincerely to give you your due recognition. I apologize for the delay due to the crisis situation."

This initiative marks a significant step in acknowledging the sacrifices made during the July Uprising and reflects the government's commitment to supporting those who contributed to the nation’s democratic movement.
