Dhaka, Mar 12 (V7N) – The Media Reform Commission, formed on November 18, is set to propose crucial reforms aimed at strengthening and ensuring the independence of media in Bangladesh. One of the primary recommendations will focus on ensuring the financial security of media workers, which the commission views as essential for courageous and independent journalism.

The commission is preparing to submit its final report by the end of March 2025, which will include a proposal for a minimum salary structure for all media workers, ensuring financial stability across the sector. Kamal Ahmed, the head of the Media Reform Commission, emphasized that without financial security, journalists may be vulnerable to corruption and compromising the objectivity of their reporting.

The report will also explore the possibility of introducing a Media Protection Act, which will safeguard journalists and media institutions from harassment, torture, and false accusations. The commission is considering the formation of an independent body to handle the withdrawal of false cases filed against journalists in recent years, aiming to protect their rights and ensure justice.

In addition to these measures, the commission is contemplating a new business model for economically endangered media institutions to ensure their sustainability. Ahmed highlighted that economic stability for institutions is equally vital for the independence of the media.

Furthermore, the commission plans to propose a comprehensive Media Protection Law that would guarantee the protection of journalists, particularly in situations of physical harm. This includes tackling impunity in cases of journalist deaths and ensuring that the state assumes responsibility for the protection of media institutions and their workers.

Additionally, the commission is reviewing the structure of the Press Council and is considering expanding its scope to include television, radio, and online media. This overhaul aims to ensure that all forms of media are covered under a more robust regulatory framework, with the potential establishment of a Broadcasting Commission.

The Media Reform Commission’s recommendations, once implemented, are expected to significantly enhance the safety, financial security, and independence of media professionals in Bangladesh.
