Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) — The Government of Bangladesh has declared Begum Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a former three-time Prime Minister, as a Very Important Person (VIP). The declaration was made through an official gazette notification issued on Monday, marking a significant development amid the country’s evolving political environment.
The order was signed by Mohammad Abdul Wadud Chowdhury, Director General (Administration) at the Office of the Chief Adviser, acting under directives from the President.
According to the gazette, the decision was made under Section 2(a) of the Special Security Force Act, 2021. This legal provision authorizes the state to extend special security measures to individuals deemed critical to national interest, public importance, or state responsibilities. The notification states that the decision came into immediate effect.
Khaleda Zia, one of the most influential political figures in Bangladesh’s contemporary history, has been hospitalized at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital for several days due to multiple age-related health complications. Her medical condition, including chronic cardiac, renal, and liver issues, has remained a matter of national concern over the past years.
The declaration of VIP status is expected to ensure enhanced security arrangements, streamlined administrative protocols, and high-level coordination for her protection and medical care. Although the government has not yet elaborated on the specific measures included under her new designation, the Special Security Force (SSF) typically provides comprehensive security coverage to individuals under this category.
Political analysts say the timing of the announcement could carry symbolic and administrative significance, particularly as the nation navigates a sensitive political moment. Khaleda Zia, who served as Prime Minister from 1991–1996, 1996, and 2001–2006, remains a central figure in the country’s political landscape despite long-standing legal and health challenges.
Leaders within the BNP have responded cautiously to the government’s decision, stating that any move ensuring Khaleda Zia’s well-being is welcome, but emphasizing the need for continued humanitarian consideration. They reiterated their demand for her unrestricted access to advanced medical treatment.
Meanwhile, public reactions reflect a mixed sentiment, with supporters expressing relief at the additional protections, while critics question the motives and timing behind the declaration.
As the political climate remains delicate, the government’s move adds a new dimension to national discourse surrounding Khaleda Zia’s health, security, and future role in Bangladesh’s politics.
