Dhaka, Dec 03 (V7N) — Government primary school teachers across the country have announced a ‘complete shutdown’ from today to press home their three-point demands, intensifying their ongoing movement.
On Wednesday, primary assistant teachers in several districts—including Sherpur—stopped conducting annual examinations and observed a sit-in protest. However, a mixed picture emerged in different parts of the country.
In Barishal, Kurigram, and several other districts, many teachers were seen holding annual examinations despite the strike, effectively relaxing the shutdown program.
Sources within the education sector confirmed that although the strike is still being observed “on paper,” annual exams are continuing in many schools to avoid academic disruption.
Meanwhile, government secondary school assistant teachers have suspended their strike, considering the importance of ongoing annual examinations. Exams in those schools were supposed to resume today.
However, the sudden announcement—made late Tuesday night—meant that many students were not informed in time. As a result, exams could not be held in several institutions. Teachers said that examinations in those schools will begin tomorrow.
Secondary school assistant teachers had been on strike since December 1, demanding four issues including:
-
Inclusion in the 9th Grade BCS cadre
-
Revision of salary and allowances
Their program has been put on hold due to ongoing annual examinations in most schools.
