Dhaka, Feb 22 (V7N) — The Election Commission (EC) has decided to include 16- and 17-year-old citizens in the National Identity Card (NID) registration process.

Details of the Decision

  • Announced through a circular from the National Identity Registration Division of the EC Secretariat.

  • This decision is based on Section 5 of the National Identity Registration Act, 2010 (amended 2013).

  • Citizens who have completed or will complete 16 or 17 years of age on the date of application are now eligible to apply for NID registration.

  • The circular, signed by Khan Abi Shahanur Khan, Director of Registration and Expatriates, has been sent to all regional, district, and upazila election officers for immediate implementation.

This move allows younger citizens to be formally included in the electoral system, laying the groundwork for future participation in elections and other civic responsibilities.
