SANGSAD BHABAN, Mar 30 (V7N) — In a significant display of political engagement, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a private meeting with the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, in the Parliament House on Monday. The meeting took place in the Prime Minister’s chamber shortly after both leaders attended the funeral prayers (Janaza) of Professor Dilara Hafiz, the late wife of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, held at the South Plaza of Sangsad Bhavan.
According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the two leaders entered the Prime Minister's room immediately following the funeral ceremony at noon. The discussion, which lasted approximately 18 minutes, was also attended by BNP Secretary General and Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Following the brief but notable exchange, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally escorted the Leader of the Opposition back to his own designated office within the Parliament building. While the specific details of the conversation were not officially disclosed, the meeting is seen as a key moment of high-level dialogue between the treasury and opposition benches during the ongoing first session of the 13th National Parliament.
Political observers noted that the presence of the BNP Secretary General suggests the talks may have touched upon the legislative agenda currently before the House, including the upcoming 50-hour debate on the President’s address and the implementation of the July National Charter. The rare one-on-one interaction between the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition signals a potential for constructive parliamentary discourse as the new government navigates its first major session.
