Dhaka, Jun 03 (V7N) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid has said that the election of Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is a “unique milestone” for Bangladesh.

She made the remarks during a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (June 3) morning.

Shama Obaid stated that the achievement was made possible under the “visionary leadership” of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the diplomatic qualifications of Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. She further described the development as a continuation of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s diplomatic success, beginning from Ziaur Rahman to the present leadership.

She also said that the Prime Minister will decide whether the Foreign Minister will continue to hold full responsibilities after assuming the UNGA presidency.

Regarding the Prime Minister’s foreign visits, Shama Obaid noted that several countries have extended invitations, but final decisions on official visits will be made by the head of government.

Commenting on remarks made by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the killing of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, the State Minister said that Bangladesh does not consider statements made in India regarding internal legal matters. She added that the government is currently working on ensuring justice in the Hadi murder case.
