Dhaka, Aug 4 (V7N)- The first meeting of the special committee formed to amend the Constitution is being held today. The meeting will focus on determining the committee’s work plan.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at around 12 noon on Tuesday at the National Assembly Building.
Earlier on July 13, the National Assembly formed a 12-member Special Committee on Amendments to the Constitution with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed as its chairman.
The government had requested the opposition party to nominate five members for inclusion in the committee. However, the opposition did not submit any names.
The opposition party rejected the formation of the committee on the day it was announced and staged a walkout from parliament. They claimed that the country needs broader reforms rather than only constitutional amendments.
The opposition has been demanding that the reform process initiated by the interim government should be followed instead of proceeding with constitutional amendments through the current committee.
