Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N)- Bangladesh has placed four conditions before India ahead of a possible visit to New Delhi by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, including the extradition of convicted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and those accused in the murder of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson AKM Shahidul Karim disclosed the matter at a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday morning.
He said officials from Bangladesh and India have been in contact for several weeks regarding the possibility of Tarique Rahman's visit to India. However, the process has faced complications following public comments made by Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi on August 5.
According to the spokesperson, Dhaka wants a suitable and conducive environment to be ensured before the prime minister's visit. Bangladesh has therefore urged India to take prompt action on its request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and other fugitive convicts.
Dhaka has also asked India to extradite individuals accused of the murder of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, in accordance with the bilateral extradition treaty. Bangladesh is currently awaiting New Delhi's response.
Shahidul Karim said the government would pursue a “Bangladesh First” policy in strengthening relations with India and other neighboring countries. He said bilateral ties should be based on sovereign equality, national dignity, non-interference in each other's internal affairs and mutual benefit.
The spokesperson's comments come as discussions continue over a possible visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi.
