Dhaka, Oct 4 (V7N) – The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance today stressed ensuring transparency, accountability and economic stability in the country's financial institutions, particularly banks.

The committee made the call at its fourth meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Mushfiqur Rahman, MP, in the chair.

At the meeting, the Finance Ministry presented a detailed overview of the current situation of financial institutions (banks). Members of the committee took part in the discussion and stressed the need for greater transparency, accountability and economic stability in the sector, according to a press release from the Parliament Secretariat. The committee instructed the ministry to present specific data and information on the issue at its next meeting.

The meeting also confirmed the minutes of the committee's second and third meetings and reviewed in detail the progress in implementing their decisions.

The committee expressed sincere thanks to Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, for participating in important meetings held at Wall Street in New York and appropriately presenting issues related to Bangladesh's interests, aimed at highlighting the country's economic prospects internationally, attracting foreign investment and promoting economic development.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam Moni, MP, Md Jalal Uddin, MP, Moinul Islam Khan, MP, Md Shafiqul Rahman (Kiron), MP, Md Saiful Alam, MP, Syed Zainul Abedin, MP, and Md Abul Hasnat, MP, attended the meeting. The Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, Secretary of the Finance Division, senior officials of Bangladesh Bank and other relevant agencies, and officials concerned from the Finance Ministry and the Parliament Secretariat were also present.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance is responsible for overseeing the activities of the Finance Ministry and its subordinate departments and agencies. The committee has been actively reviewing the performance of financial institutions, particularly banks, amid efforts by the government to reform the banking sector and ensure financial stability. The government has been working to strengthen the banking sector through various reforms, including improving corporate governance, reducing non-performing loans, and enhancing regulatory oversight.
